PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The city of Philadelphia sweltered through record-breaking heat that prompted early dismissal of schools.

The National Weather Service says the mercury hit 96 degrees at Philadelphia International Airport, breaking a record for the date set in 1956.

The city school district on Monday announced a noon dismissal for Tuesday and said all after-school activities, including all athletic programs and professional development classes, would be canceled.

Forecasters urged people to drink plenty of fluids, try to stay out of the sun and in air conditioning, and to check on relatives and neighbors.
