BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Police say a Pennsylvania man killed in a crash had crossed into oncoming traffic, triggering the chain-reaction collision that also killed a New Jersey police officer.
State police say the 68-year-old crossed the median Tuesday morning into eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 in Bernards Township.
He slammed head-on into a car driven by Summit police Officer Matthew Tarentino. Tarentino’s car flipped and hit a third car, injuring another man.
Tarentino was on his way into work when he was killed. The 29-year-old is survived by a wife and two children. His wife is pregnant with their third child. He was posthumously promoted to detective on Wednesday.
Police are not releasing the name of the other man killed as they try to contact his family.
