THIRD MAN DIES FOLLOWING FLORIDA POWER PLANT ACCIDENT

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s officials say Antonio Navarrete died Wednesday evening. Tampa Electric Company officials said the accident happened June 29 at a power plant just southeast of downtown Tampa. It occurred at the plant’s coal-fired boiler, while workers were performing routine maintenance on the slag tank at the plant southeast of Tampa. Slag is a byproduct created when coal is burned for electricity.



MAN DIVING FOR GOLF BALLS ATTACKED BY ALLIGATOR IN FLORIDA

The attack occurred Friday afternoon at the Rotonda Golf & Country Club. Charlotte County Fire & EMS spokeswoman Dee Hawkins-Garland says the middle-aged man was underwater in a pond when he felt a bite on his left arm. He was able to free himself, and officials responded to the scene. The man was airlifted to a Fort Myers hospital as a trauma alert.

PASSENGER PLANE LANDS IN MIAMI AFTER FALSE FIRE ALARM

Swift Air Flight 2933 landed at the Miami International Airport on Friday afternoon. It had been traveling from Kingston, Jamaica, to Cleveland, Ohio. Airport spokesman Marc Henderson says the airport received a message from the Boeing 737 aircraft saying it needed to make an emergency landing. The plane landed safely, and rescue officials determined there was no fire on board.

MAN DRAGS FLORIDA POLICE OFFICER AFTER TRAFFIC STOP

Local news outlets report Lake City Officer Stuart Robinson suffered a head injury Thursday night and was airlifted to a hospital, where he was in stable condition Friday. An arrest report says officers stopped 30-year-old Breon Pope and learned he had a suspended driver’s license and an active arrest warrant. Pope suddenly sped away and Robinson became attached to the pickup truck and was dragged until he became dislodged and landed in a ditch.

BROOMSTICK BEATS BACK SWORD IN FLORIDA BEER BATTLE

Tallahassee police report that an officer driving by the store Thursday night saw a man acting suspiciously while leaving the store and detained him after the store owner yelled, “Stop him.” Police said 47-year-old Reginald Lide had entered the store holding a sword upright and demanding a beer. The store owner defended himself with a broomstick before the man fled.
