REMSEN, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 74-year-old pilot was killed in central New York when his plane made a sudden nose dive and crashed into a hayfield.

Jonathan Coxwell, of Remsen, New York, was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at the site of the crash near his residence about 17 miles (28 kilometers) north of Utica. Police say the victim was the only occupant of the single-engine plane.

It’s not yet clear what caused the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are assisting in the investigation.
