BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland Zoo officials say the condition of a baby giraffe named Julius is now dire, and they aren’t sure he’ll live through the day.

Jane Ballentine, director of public relations for the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, said in a news release that Julius’s condition “took a turn from critical to dire” on Friday and that he has only a “slim chance of making it through the day.”

Ballentine said veterinary and animal care teams are giving Julius an IV solution donated from Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital.

Over the weekend Julius was given a second plasma transfusion.

Officials say Julius has had health problems since his birth on June 15.
