NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Police in New Jersey are searching for a man who they say stole a car that was left running with a 2-year-old inside.
The car was stolen in Newark when a 24-year-old Union woman left it running with her daughter inside as she dropped off groceries for a relative Monday afternoon. Police found the vehicle about 400 feet (about 123 meters) away.
The child wasn’t injured but was taken to University Hospital for observation.
Police say the victim’s cellphone was stolen.
Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose says the carjacking was preventable. Ambrose says the city continues to warn residents about leaving their cars running and unattended.
