DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Officials in eastern Illinois want to study railroad crossing safety after a teenager riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a train last month.
David Schnelle is director of urban services and engineering in Danville. He says when looking at the busiest rail lines in Danville, the crossing where the teen was hit is the only one without a gate that extends across driving lanes from the warning light poles.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette says (https://bit.ly/2sVFJ0T ) Schnelle informed aldermen that pursuing a safety corridor study would involve a team, including Illinois Department of Transportation representatives.
Schnelle says there are safety mechanisms like double gates that can restrict vehicles and people.
Thirteen-year-old Deon Jackson was hit by a train June 30 as he approached a crossing. He died at a hospital.
