NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - A vehicle crashed into a Delaware animal shelter housing more than 100 animals, killing the driver and forcing workers to find temporary new homes for dozens of displaced cats and dogs.

WDEL-FM reports the driver, identified as 33-year-old Latoya Cooper, and three cats died in Sunday’s fire at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals building. Brandywine Valley SPCA staff and Cooper’s family arranged a Monday vigil for the mother of five children.

The News Journal reports the SPCA’s marketing and programs director Linda Torelli says one cat remains in treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. She says 36 cats and 62 dogs were relocated to temporary housing.

Torelli says New Castle facility is indefinitely closed because of significant damage.

Details about the crash’s cause weren’t immediately available.
