ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A man who led police on a chase before he caused a fatal wrong-way crash last year has pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and a weapons charge.

Union County prosecutors say Surpris Ophilien Jr. faces a 20-year state prison term when he’s sentence Sept. 15.

The charges against the 32-year-old Rahway man stem from events that occurred in Elizabeth in July 2016.

Prosecutors say Elizabeth police were responding to a reported fight when officers saw a pickup truck speed through a red light. A brief pursuit ensued, but it was ended when the truck went the wrong way down a one-way street.

Moments later, officers heard a crash on a nearby overpass in which the truck hit another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was killed.
