TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Tempe police say a man has been arrested for alleged animal cruelty.

They say 21-year-old Shundong Hu is accused of striking a Golden Retriever puppy with a metal rod.

Police investigators say the dog suffered severe injuries including fractures of the skull and cheekbone along with a broken tooth and multiple abrasions and lacerations on one shoulder and the top of the head.

But they say the puppy is expected to survive.

Officers were called to a Tempe apartment complex after a woman reported hearing an animal in distress since November.

The witness allegedly saw Hu strike the dog repeatedly while the puppy remained trapped in a metal enclosure.

Police say Hu was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge. He won’t answer questions and has asked for a lawyer.
