PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - A man changing a flat tire on the shoulder of a highway escaped serious injury when he was struck by another vehicle.

The man was driving a sport utility vehicle on Route 21 north in Passaic early Sunday when his tire went flat. The man then pulled onto the shoulder to change the tire while two passengers stayed in the SUV.

The man was soon struck by a passing car that had drifted to the right. The impact sent the man onto a grass median that has a 15-foot drop-off.

The man was soon able to walk back up the hill to the roadway and await medical treatment. He was treated at a hospital for undisclosed minor injuries.

No charges have been filed.
