INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - A western Missouri man has been charged with murder and armed criminal action.

KMBC-TV reports that 51-year-old Patrick L. Barkwell has been charged and taken into custody in connection with the death of 33-year-old Christopher King.

Court records say Barkwell accompanied a friend to retrieve his friend’s vehicle from King’s house. King’s mother told police that King had borrowed the vehicle but hadn’t returned it as requested.

Barkwell reportedly shot King in the chest with a revolver and disposed of the gun into the Missouri River after the shooting.

Court records say Barkwell later confessed to the murder.

Prosecutors have requested bond to be set at $150,000.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office doesn’t know if Barkwell has an attorney.
