KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A 1914 monument honoring fallen Confederate soldiers in Tennessee has been splattered with paint, and opponents are signing a petition to have it removed from a neighborhood near the University of Tennessee campus.
The Knoxville News Sentinel said an overturned can of paint was still sitting nearby Wednesday when the vandalism was discovered.
Police said no one reported the crime, which happened a few days after a deadly clash over a Confederate monument in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Knoxville resident Ben Allen said he started the online petition Tuesday, and got more than 1,100 signatures by Wednesday afternoon.
Mayor Madeline Rogero’s office said she was preparing a statement.
