WESTMINSTER, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina authorities say a driver has died after his car ran off the road and caught on fire following an after-prom party.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller tells The Greenville News (https://grnol.co/2oBEzG1 ) that the single-vehicle accident happened early Sunday on a highway near Westminster.

Authorities say the 2004 Ford Mustang went off the left side of the road, hit a guardrail and rolled down the embankment before hitting trees and catching on fire.

A news release from Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis says the man who died was 18-year-old Cole Dylan Wheeler of Seneca.

Addis said Wheeler was at an after-prom party, but he didn’t attend prom this year. He had already graduated high school. Addis says alcohol is suspected in the crash but toxicology tests aren’t complete.
