CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Hundreds of volunteer fire departments throughout the state are set to receive first-quarter payments from West Virginia’s new 12 percent tax on consumer fireworks.
Citing a report from the state Treasurer’s Office, the Charleston Gazette-Mail (https://bit.ly/2dyjt9D ) says each of the 428 departments will receive a check for, coincidentally, $428.
The report says taxes for the first two months of legal sales of the higher-power fireworks brought in a little over $740,000, including $134,000 collected in June and $606,000 in July.
Under the law, 75 percent of the tax revenue goes to the Veterans Facility Support Fund, to help fund construction of a veterans’ nursing home in Beckley and maintain the nursing home in Clarksburg.
The other 25 percent will be divided among the volunteer fire departments.
