TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Officials say the thousands of people camping at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend aren’t allowed to have any fires because of the drought.
Races are scheduled both Saturday and Sunday at the track in east Alabama, and the cooler weather with overnight lows predicted in the 40s would make camp fires ideal.
But track officials say no outdoor burning is allowed in compliance with a state order issued because of the dry weather. Officials issued a fire warning Friday for central Alabama because of the lack of rain and parched conditions.
The entire state is experiencing a drought, and conditions are worst in an area surrounding the race track.
The Alabama Forestry Commission says more than 940 wildfires have occurred statewide in the last month, burning more than 11,000 acres.
