With Halloween just 13 days away, the makers of M&M’s have sweet news for caramel-candy lovers, CNNMoney reported Tuesday.

Mars Chocolate, which makes the iconic 75-year-old chocolate candies, will debut a new product in line in May 2017 that features a gooey caramel center.

“Caramel is extremely trendy,” company chief of research and development Hank Izzo said, CNNMoney reported. “It’s a $2.2 billion flavor segment and the fastest growing segment in food right now. We want to be part of this category.”

So why the wait?

“Because it is a brand new production, we’re still in the process of finishing the manufacturing setup for the caramel M&M’s,” Mr. Izzo explained.

Created during World War II, the candy “worked well as a snack for soldiers in the field because ’they would melt in the mouth and not in the hand,’ as its slogan says,” CNNMoney reported.

It wasn’t until 1954 that peanut M&M’s made their debut and 1991 that the peanut butter versions was first sold.
