PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 60-year-old man has been convicted of beating a Yorkshire terrier to death with a cane.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2fbFMkH ) that a Rhode Island Superior Court jury on Tuesday found Nicola Patalano guilty of felony malicious injury to a 10-pound Yorkie named Missy.
Prosecutors say a woman was walking the dog in the city of Cranston in 2014 when she encountered Patalano walking his own dog, a 20-pound terrier. After the two dogs began barking at each other, prosecutors say Patalano struck Missy with a wooden cane on her head and body. The dog was pronounced dead at a local animal hospital.
Patalano faces up to two years in prison at sentencing.
