British moviegoers don’t seem to be entranced by Emma Watson’s latest film, her first leading role since portraying Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” franchise. Miss Watson’s “Colonia” — titled “The Colony” in the U.K. — brought in a mere £47 ($61) at the British box office over the weekend, The Guardian newspaper reported.
“The Colony stars Watson as a woman attempting to infiltrate a cult in order to rescue her husband (Daniel Brühl), who is being held in Colonia Dignidad, a religious community that, in real-life, was founded by Wehrmacht officer and Hitler Youth veteran Paul Schäfer,” The Guardian explained. “The film, which had a distribution plan built on home-streaming, was released on video on demand on Friday, the same day as a token release in three UK cinemas.”
The movie, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival, hasn’t exactly left critics spellbound, either. According to the movie-review website Rotten Tomatoes, “Colonia” was liked by a mere 21 percent of reviewers who screened it.
The British newspaper’s own reviewer complained the film suffered from “dodginess, plot-holes the size of Saturn’s rings and an ending pinched from Ben Affleck’s Argo.”
