PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Fire officials say 16 residents were displaced after a two-and-a-half story apartment building went up in flames in Paterson over the weekend.

Deputy Fire Chief Frank Calamita says the fire at the Spring Street dwelling was first reported at 2:55 a.m. Sunday. The Record reports (https://bit.ly/2grGoBY ) roughly 30 firefighters assisted in knocking down the blaze before it could spread to any neighboring structures.

The flames were confined mostly to the basement, where the building’s walls and ceiling were damaged.

New Jersey Red Cross officials say the organization is providing financial assistance, temporary lodging, food and clothing to the affected families.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. An investigation is ongoing.
