PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Officials say a man has died after he was pulled from a burning Providence home by an off-duty firefighter who ran in without any protective gear.
Fire Lt. Robert McCollough says he saw smoke coming from the home around noon on Thursday and saw two men screaming for someone inside.
McCollough, a firefighter for nearly three decades, says he entered the burning home without protective gear, found the man and pulled him to the sidewalk.
Fire officials say the man suffered burns to at least 95 percent of his body.
The public safety commissioner’s office tells WPRI-TV that 36-year-old Aubrey Baidoo was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Officials say it doesn’t appear suspicious.
