SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A Savannah animal shelter has closed temporarily after a puppy was diagnosed with a highly contagious virus.

Chatham County Animal Services said in a news release Tuesday that its shelter has ceased adoptions and closed to the public. The agency said a recently adopted puppy has been diagnosed with parvovirus, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in dogs.

Other dogs potentially exposed to the virus have been quarantined and have shown no signs of infection, the agency said, and no animals have been euthanized. Staff members are working to clean the shelter.

Chatham County officials said the animal shelter will likely be safe to reopen next week.
