ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Fire officials say six northern New Jersey residents were displaced after their Elizabeth home was heavily damaged in an early Christmas morning blaze.
Acting Deputy Fire Chief Sean Duffy says the fire broke out in the top-floor attic of a multi-family house on Westfield Avenue just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
The top floor of the 2 ½-story building sustained “extreme fire damage” while the lower floors experienced water damage.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the structure.
Duffy says the home can be repaired and made livable again, although that process will take several weeks.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
