PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island officials say the state will receive $1.9 million in federal funding to help fishermen.
The state’s congressional delegation, Gov. Lincoln Chafee, and the director of the state Department of Environmental Management said Thursday that state fishery directors in the Northeast and officials from the National Marine Fisheries Service now agree on how to disburse $32.8 million in federal fishery disaster relief funding. Rhode Island expects to receive $1.9 million in direct assistance to eligible permit holders and state-specific grants.
The Northeast groundfishery was declared a disaster in 2012 due to sharp reductions in catch limits anticipated for the 2013 fishing year.
Forty-three permit holders in the state with over 5,000 pounds of groundfish landings in any one of the past four years will receive $32,463 each.
