PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A former Autauga County official who pleaded guilty to using fire department money for personal expenses has reported to jail.

Danny Chavers was sentenced earlier this month to serve six months in jail for ethics violations and theft charges. The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Chavers surrendered to authorities at the Autauga County Jail on Friday afternoon (https://on.mgmadv.com/1m3tXbJ ).

Prosecutors say Chavers, who served as chairman of the County Commission, chief of the Autaugaville Volunteer Fire Department and head of the city’s water works, falsified documents to get a state grant on behalf of the fire department and made personal purchases with the money.

Chavers will be on supervised probation for two years following his release and must perform 320 hours of community service.
