LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 20-year-old is going to prison for eight to 20 years for driving under the influence of marijuana when his car ran up on a North Las Vegas sidewalk, killing an 18-year-old and badly hurting the teen’s girlfriend as they walked together.
Christian Ivan Diaz said at sentencing Monday that he was sorry for the New Year’s Day 2013 crash that killed Jesse Hill and injured 16-year-old Anne-Marie Ricci.
Diaz pleaded guilty in January to two felony DUI charges.
Ricci and Hill’s mother, Crystal Hill, told Clark County District Court Judge Jerome Tao they will always be affected by the crash.
Hill says her son was stolen from her.
Ricci is still recovering from her injuries.
KLAS-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1fUblec ) that she says she had hoped for more of an apology.
