VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (AP) - Police in a Birmingham suburb are investigating after a woman was found in a trash compactor.

Vestavia Hills police Lt. Brian Gillum says the woman was found in the device around 9 p.m. Friday. Her husband had reported her missing earlier in the day.

Gillum tells WBRC-TV (https://bit.ly/1m76Ksv) that she was conscious and talking with police officers before she was taken to UAB Hospital.

Police said they were trying to determine how she ended up in the trash compactor.

A police officer had spotted her SUV, a white Jeep Cherokee, in a parking lot of the Colonial Center on Blue Lake Drive. Police dogs were used to search the area and found her in the trash compactor.

Police aren’t releasing the woman’s name, and few other details were available Saturday.
