CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota man accused of forging a check, breaking into a post office and escaping from the county jail has been arrested.

The Daily Republic (https://bit.ly/OcBrOL ) reports that 18-year-old James Shortbear is back in custody.

The newspaper reports records show that the Chamberlain man tried to cash a check originally written to AT&T, but amended with his name.

Records state Shortbear later broke into a post office and took a $210 traveler’s check.

Records show he managed to escape from the Brule County Jail after being arrested by covering his head with a blanket while still wearing an orange jail shirt.

The newspaper reports Shortbear faces several charges including first-degree escape, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Officials wouldn’t say if Shortbear has an attorney.
