HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - A suburban Portland man who told a Washington County Circuit Court jury he shot and killed a beagle-dachshund mix dog in self-defense has been sentenced to 90 days in jail on his first-degree animal abuse conviction.
In addition, 42-year-old Gregory Chupp of Tualatin was ordered Friday to forfeit the gun seized after the July 17, 2013, shooting. He is not allowed to possess any firearms for three years or domestic animals for five years and was ordered to pay $830 restitution.
Tualatin police say the dog belonging to a neighbor had wandered into Chupp’s backyard. At trial, the man contended that he, as a human being, is considered livestock and was in danger of being hurt by another animal.
