MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York firefighter and his wife are accused of attacking a pregnant woman in a dispute over a car.

A spokesman for Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis says firefighter Charles Clayton was suspended without pay Thursday in connection with Wednesday’s incident.

Authorities say Clayton and his wife, Lashea Clayton, were arraigned on charges of assault and child endangerment. The woman allegedly was punched and kicked in front of her two young children.

The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1i9cxKd ) reports that the Claytons allegedly accosted the 32-year-old woman to get her to relinquish the title to her car. Authorities say there appeared to be a conflict over whether the woman or a jailed member of the Clayton family owned the vehicle.

The Claytons’ lawyer says his clients deny the allegations.
