WASHINGTON (AP) - The campaign treasurer for a former D.C. councilmember has turned himself in to face theft and other charges.
D.C. police say 32-year-old Hakim Sutton surrendered Friday, accompanied by an attorney.
Sutton was the treasurer for Michael Brown, who lost his re-election bid in 2012 after announcing that most of his campaign funds had been stolen.
Sutton is charged in a 14-count indictment with stealing $115,000 from Brown’s campaign account and using the money on personal expenses, including domestic and international travel. Court documents show Sutton was represented by a public defender during an arraignment Friday afternoon and was released on personal recognizance.
Brown was convicted of bribery last year. He’s now cooperating with federal investigators in a wide-ranging probe of corruption in District of Columbia politics.
