SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A measure to set early restrictions on law enforcement’s use of drones is on its way to the governor.
The House voted 67-5 Thursday to approve the bill, which the governor can choose to sign or veto.
Proponents of the measure warn that restrictions are needed as drone technology evolves and becomes more common.
They say the unmanned aerial devices are useful to law enforcement and other agencies, but that steps must be taken to prevent Big Brother-type surveillance.
The measure would require law enforcement to obtain a warrant before using a drone. It would also regulate which kinds of data can be collected and for how long.
The devices often resemble radio-controlled helicopters. They can range in size, from that of remote-controlled toys to small jet airliners.
