NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - New London authorities are investigating a suspicious fire at the offices of The Day newspaper that forced an evacuation of the building. No one was injured.

Firefighters responded to The Day just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1hodhrl ) a small fire was burning near the production area and a hallway was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived.

Fire officials say sprinklers put out much of the fire, which damaged parts of a wall and ceiling. Authorities say it appears to have started above a metal cabinet in a hallway.

Mike Gentry, a maintenance supervisor at The Day, says firefighters prevented substantial water damage by putting tarps over inserts for Sunday’s newspapers that had been printed.

Police say they’re treating the fire as a crime until proven otherwise.
