This page of a decision by a federal court judge, a public record, shows the seal of Los Angeles County in 2014, top, and in 2004, bottom. The county's decision to put a cross to its seal for the first time in a decade was unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, April 6, 2016. The 2004 design omitted the cross atop the historic San Gabriel Mission, at right center, because at the time it had been removed during earthquake retrofitting. The 2014 redesign that restored the cross was ruled unconstitutional. (U.S. District Court via AP)
