This photograph provided by the Lower Mississippi Conservation Committee shows Steven George, a field zoologist with the Army Engineer Research and Development Center, holding a paddlefish on Aug. 6, 2019, in the Bonnet Carré Spillway in Louisiana. For weeks in August, state and federal biologists worked to rescue endangered fish that had been swept out of the Mississippi River during the nation's long flood fight. The endangered sturgeon and flat-billed, open-mouthed cousins called paddlefish were among untold numbers of fish carried through the Bonnet Carré Spillway while it was open to protect New Orleans levees from high water.
