Thomas E. Perez, who has led the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division since 2009, is likely to be nominated by President Obama as his new Secretary of Labor, according to the AP.

Mr. Perez has played a large role in the administration’s efforts to combat state laws requiring voter identification requirements in states like Texas and South Carolina that opponents argue are intended to suppress the vote of Democratic-leaning segments of the population, while proponents say they are simply meant to combat voter fraud.

He was previously Labor Secretary for the state of Maryland and was the first Latino elected to the Montgomery County Council.
