President Obama said Friday his administration supports repealing California’s ban on same-sex marriage because “it’s important” to stand up for equality for gay couples.
“The basic principle is, let’s treat everybody fairly, let’s treat everybody equally,” he said.

The Justice Department Thursday filed a brief with the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the state’s Proposition 8, which outlaws same-sex marriage.
