Sirte or Sirt, also Surt and Syrte ) is a city in Libya. It is on the south coast of the Gulf of Sidra (ancient Syrtis Major, from which Sirte's name derives). Sirte lies halfway between Tripoli and Benghazi. On 1 September 2011, Muammar Gaddafi proclaimed Sirte to be the capital of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya following the capture of Tripoli by forces loyal to the National Transitional Council. - Source: Wikipedia
