Shot putter Ralph Rose carried the U.S. flag during the opening ceremony of the 1908 Olympics in London but refused to dip the flag, a customary gesture of respect, before British King Edward VII in the royal box. Legend has it that Irish-American team captain Martin Sheridan supported the decision, explaining, "This flag dips to no earthly king."
