A 11-year-old in Texas is in custody on aggravated assault charges after police alleged that the boy shot another 11-year-old boy on a school playground.
The shooting took place in Crandall, Texas, southeast of Dallas, after 7 p.m. local time Sunday, the Crandall Police Department said. The two children were on the playground at the town’s Opal Smith Elementary School at the time.
Both the victim and suspect are Opal Smith students, Crandall Police Department Assistant Chief Lt. Ivan Elizarraras said in a social media video, though he did not name either.
Lt. Elizarraras said in the video that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg. The victim was airlifted to a Dallas hospital, where staff determined the wound was not life-threatening; the boy was at home recovering as of Monday, Lt. Elizarraras said.
Police took the suspect into custody at the scene and recovered the gun. The suspect is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence, Lt. Elizarraras said.
The police found that the gun did not come from the suspect’s home, and are looking into where the suspect could have obtained it.
“We’re thankful to the Crandall Police Department for their quick response and the care they showed in handling this situation. We’ll continue to support their investigation as needed. Our hearts are with the students involved and their families,” the Crandall Independent School District told KXAS-TV.
Opal Smith Elementary opened on its normal schedule on Monday.
