News reports last week that Turkey is acting as an intermediary between the United States and Iran should alarm every American.

On Nov. 30, while in Iran, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan touted expanded Turkish cooperation with Iran on energy, trade, border security and regional security matters. Mr. Fidan perversely described Israel as “the biggest threat to stability in the Middle East.”

Although Turkey presents itself as a U.S. ally and a NATO member with regional influence, this nominal status cannot override the country’s extensive ties to Iran. These ties raise serious questions about whether Turkey should be a participant in any U.S. efforts to end Iran’s future ability to threaten its neighbors.
