On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of birthright citizenship, an issue that will inevitably have far-reaching consequences (After 160 years, Supreme Court to settle birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants,” Web, March 29).

Sooner or later, a child will be born on a space station, the moon or Mars. What determines that baby’s citizenship? The least problematical answer would be that the child inherits the citizenship of the mother, thus avoiding jurisdictional issues.

Whatever the court decides, it will have to address issues of the future as well as current circumstances.
