The Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday targeted a building in Iran where senior Islamic jurists were reportedly meeting to select a new supreme leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

At least 88 members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts were meeting in Qom, 90 miles south of Tehran, when the Israelis launched an airstrike. State-controlled news agencies in Iran said the building was “flattened.”

“The American-Zionist criminals attacked the Assembly of Experts building in Qom,” according to Tasnim, a news agency associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The number of casualties from the reported airstrike wasn’t immediately known. Iranian officials didn’t say what impact it might have on the selection of a new ruler.

Khamenei was killed Saturday during the initial bombing of Tehran. He became supreme leader following the 1989 death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic republic.
