A woman has been found guilty by a San Francisco Bay-area jury for administering an illegal silicone injection which led to her client’s death.
On Tuesday, the jury found Vivian Alexandra Gomez, 53, guilty of felony involuntary manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said on social media.
Gomez flew into San Francisco International Airport in April 2023 and went to a nearby hotel to do the procedure.
Gomez, who did not have a license to practice medicine, administered an illegal silicone butt injection to victim Christina Ashten Gourkani, who was 34 at the time. Gourkani was a model on OnlyFans and a Kim Kardashian lookalike, according to KGO-TV.
Gourkani suffered a pulmonary embolism after the injection caused an infection, according to KRON-TV. The district attorney’s office said she died of respiratory failure.
The Food and Drug Administration says silicone injections for body contouring are not approved and are illegal because they can cause “ongoing pain and serious injuries, such as scarring, tissue death, and permanent disfigurement.”
In addition, the FDA warns that if the silicone moves within the body away from the site of the injection, it can cause “an embolism (blockage of a blood vessel), stroke, infections and death.”
Gomez flew back to her home state of Florida following the procedure, but was arrested at the airport, according to KRON-TV. She was extradited to California to face charges.
Gomez was previously out of custody on a $200,000 bond, but has been returned to custody to await her sentencing on May 5. She faces up to seven years in prison, according to KPIX-TV.
