OPINION:
The bogus “Russiagate” dossier, created to thwart the outcome of the presidential election of 2016, failed, but the Mueller report that followed kept the controversy alive (“Trump’s unpresidential lack of impulse control,” Web, March 23).
In 2019, the investigation concluded after more than two years. The president did not commit a crime, but he was not exonerated. The dubious conclusion brought credibility to the “Russiagate” allegations and, by focusing only on President Trump, sidestepped the issue of the dossier instigators. In fact, the report exonerated them.
Mr. Mueller’s investigation also had far-reaching implications and created deep divisions that poisoned the political climate and affected the proper functioning of the country. There’s still no end in sight to the turmoil it created.
Yet your editorial on Mr. Trump’s response to Mr. Mueller’s death obfuscates all this by focusing instead on a social media post the president put out when he learned the man had passed away.
I do agree that good comportment is important, but ignoring or minimizing the facts just adds oil to the fire.
