OPINION:
Is our president daft? He is if he believes he can meaningfully “negotiate” with the Iranian regime (“Trump tells Iran to ‘get serious’ before it is too late,” Web, March 26).
Iran has never stuck to any of its promises or honored any of its treaties. The regime has done nothing via diplomacy but lie. This isn’t a case of simple dishonesty on its part, either; it’s a case of fundamental Islam, which requires its believers to lie to us infidels. It’s their practice of taqiyya.
Just as Neville Chamberlain discovered that his negotiations with Adolf Hitler just prior to World War II were worthless, President Trump will discover the same after coming to some sort of “deal” with Iran. The previous group of radical Islamist dictator ayatollahs have been replaced by others with essentially the same ideology and aims as the former group: Death to America.
To stop the bombing, they will eventually agree to anything Mr. Trump demands during formal negotiating sessions and then ignore everything they agreed to soon afterward while rebuilding the country and restarting their nuclear arms programs in even greater secrecy.
The U.S. government must know its enemy and protect the nation and its citizens from harm. Iran was close to having operable nuclear weapons and the means — intercontinental ballistic missiles — to deliver them. As soon as the country had nukes, it would have used them.
This is unlike the Cold War, in which both sides operated rationally under the “mutually assured destruction” scenario. Islamists are unaffected by the MAD supposition, as they are committed to killing as many infidels (us) as possible and don’t care whether they or millions of their people are martyred in the process.
They believe they will all be richly rewarded in paradise, which makes them extremely dangerous in this life. Islam is incompatible with Western civilization, and proud of it.
The Iranian regime responds only to strength and resolve, so it must be totally defeated. Nothing less will suffice.
