Bruce Springsteen has teamed up with the American Civil Liberties Union to create a video pairing his 1984 hit song “Born in the U.S.A.” with the faces of Americans who could lose their birthright citizenship under a Trump administration executive order.
Mr. Springsteen’s campaign comes as the Trump administration prepares to argue its case before the Supreme Court on April 1.
ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said the idea came to him when he found himself humming the song’s chorus in response to a question about the birthright citizenship order during an interview with Katie Couric two days after President Trump’s inauguration.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Mr. Romero said the song is a fitting anthem for the fight, originally written about a disillusioned Vietnam veteran calling on the nation to live up to its ideals.
The ACLU warned that losing the case could mean hundreds of thousands born in the United States each year would have no citizenship, no legal identity, and no real protections — creating what they describe as a permanent and growing underclass.
