President Trump called three leaders in the Middle East on Sunday as he monitors the burgeoning conflict with Iran from his Florida estate, the White House said.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt, writing on X, said Mr. Trump spoke to leaders from Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
Mr. Trump ordered joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran early Saturday. He wants to stop Tehran from getting a nuclear weapon and supporting terrorist groups in the region.
Tehran retaliated Sunday after the military strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials.
The Islamic Republic struck Israel and other targets in the Middle East, killing three American service members.
The Emirates and a U.S. Navy Base in Bahrain were among Iran’s targets.
The United Arab Emirates said it would close its main stock markets, the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) and Dubai Financial Market (DFM), on Monday and Tuesday due to the regional conflict.
The UAE Capital Market Authority said it would “continue to closely monitor developments in the region and assess the situation on an ongoing basis, taking any further measures as necessary.”
Also Sunday, Ms. Leavitt said Mr. Trump was briefed on a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, that killed three and wounded 14 at a beer garden.
The FBI is investigating whether the gunman, who was killed by police, had ties to terrorist groups. Some counterterrorism scholars have warned for decades that Iran may have created terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S., for deployment in an extreme-threat situation.
Mr. Trump opted to strike Iran after negotiators failed to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
The strikes were met with general support from Republicans, though some in the GOP said the burgeoning conflicts broke with Mr. Trump’s pledge to avoid foreign entanglements.
Congressional Democrats are dismayed, saying Mr. Trump should have consulted Congress first.
