Another member of the Washington Capitals is headed to next month’s Olympic Games.
Prospect Eriks Mateiko will join the Latvian squad in Northern Italy, the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation announced Tuesday.Â
Mateiko is the fifth member of the Capitals organization to be named to an Olympic roster for the Games. Goaltender Logan Thompson and forward Tom Wilson will represent Team Canada, while defenseman Martin Fehervary will join his Slovakian countrymen. Prospect Antoine Keller is slated to play with the French squad.Â
The Capitals selected Mateiko in the third round of the 2024 draft. The 20-year-old is playing with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, tallying 5 points in 25 appearances this season.Â
Mateiko represented Latvia at last year’s World Junior Championship. The forward scored five goals in five games while serving as an alternate captain.Â
The Olympic men’s hockey tournament will run from Feb. 11 to Feb. 22. It’s the first Olympic competition since 2014 that will feature NHL players.Â
