OPINION:
Friends of mine from Britain have been calling me to ask what’s really happening with President Trump because they find it difficult to follow the distorted news they receive from the British media.
My response had been that Mr. Trump’s policies are sound and that he is making significant improvements for America and our allies, but that he too often sounds off on other topics that distract from his progress. This provides distractions for the media to dwell upon.
An example was provided by Anath Hartmann in her recent commentary, “Trump’s Iron Dome comments at Davos cue Obama flashbacks” (Web, Jan. 26), during Mr. Trump’s comments at Davos. Ms. Hartmann correctly points out that the Iron Dome short-range defense system was conceived and developed by Israel, admittedly with financial support from America, and has been highly effective.
The Iron Dome will no doubt be incorporated into the Golden Dome now being developed, but we should recall that the opportunity for developing the essential space-based elements of a missile defensive system were recognized nearly 50 years ago by those working on President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative program.
Successive administrations refused to support the space-based elements that were conceived then and remain undeveloped.
So, in my book, President Trump’s advocacy for a Golden Dome ranks highly along with his other achievements and will hopefully be accomplished. It will surely include the many other American/Israeli components of missile defense that have been demonstrated so successfully in recent months.
The man deserves credit for what he is accomplishing.
